The STAR 3/8/2009

Smoking in public places has been burned in Eldoret. The ban came into effect on Monday as part of compliance with the Tobacco control act 2007.
The Ministry of Public Health and the Eldoret Municipal Council have teamed up in the campaign.

But newly elected mayor William Rono yesterday said smokers can light up at Nandi Park, the only designated public smoking zone.
“We have directed all other institutions to implement the new regulations as from Monday and those found contravening the new rules will be dealt with as per the provisions in

the Act,” Rono said
Last week, the Ministry of Public Health held meetings with agencies involved in the enforcement of the new law in Eldoret and 10 major towns countrywide.
Rono made the announcement during the launch of the second phase of the Kazi Kwa Vijana initiative in Eldoret West district. The event was presided over by area DC Leonard

Ngaluma.
The mayor said the council will clean the River Sosiani. The river which traverses the town will be protected against industrial and other pollutants.
Ngaluma said under the second phase of the Kazi Kwa Vijana initiative, the government had set aside sh. 12.5 million most of which will be used on sanitation projects.
“During the fist phase we achieved 70 per cent success on the projects that were done but this time around we want complete success so that the government can release more

knowing that the work done will be impressive,” Ngaluma said.
Also present were deputy mayor of Eldoret Eusila Ngenyi, Town Clerk Stanslus Ondimu, Councilors Peterson Mwangi and J.P Omondi.
